Project: Sex Determination Using Amelogenin and an LC-MS/MS Orbitrap Method

Bio

While Em began their undergraduate thesis in September 2025, they were no stranger to TEAL after being awarded an NSERC URSA and beginning their project in the summer of 2025. Em’s favorite part of this project (so far) was the opportunity to sample their own baby teeth and even some of Joy’s teeth to test for the protein amelogenin in tooth enamel for the purpose of sex determination. They are excited to continue their research through testing this method on dog teeth, which has yet to be done! Outside of the lab, Em loves strategy games such as Terraforming Mars and Settlers of Catan. They also run Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) campaigns and watch a lot of DnD shows. When not going down the very extensive rabbit hole of DnD, Em stays entertained through watching The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, reading The Hobbit, listening to their favorite musicians (Hozier, Conan Grey, and Noah Kahan), or competing at Tuesday night trivia to hopefully finally secure the 1st place prize! Em also loves musicals, especially Hadestown, and even worked as a stage manager for a little while! Bio by Janelle Pridoehl.
