Project: Sex Determination Using Amelogenin and an LC-MS/MS Orbitrap Method

Bio

After completing an undergraduate thesis with TEAL, Em continues their scientific journey as a master’s student. In preparation for the jump to grad school, Em took the opportunity to travel to Copenhagen over the summer, to collaborate with and learn from the Welker group at the GLOBE Institute. There, Em confirmed the viability of using amelogenin for sex determination of canids and gained insight to refine the method used here at Trent. This was Em’s first trip to Europe, and while it was very enjoyable, they were disappointed they couldn’t track down a cheese danish in Denmark. Em loves their project but is also excited to get into some traditional collagen extraction through this year’s grad lab project. To help mitigate the stress of grad school, as well as moderate a recent obsession with the 3D printer, Em has turned to baking and has built a repertoire of cookies and breads that is appreciated by the other lab members. Outside the lab, a personal goal this year is to win over their roommate’s cat “Monster” who screams at them and seems to be out to injure or at least trip them at every opportunity. Em has also taken up rec volleyball and hopes to win one game before the season is over. Lastly, a follow up on last year’s personal goal: their trivia team has won first place!
